Then I'll go after the interior, which is probably going to be around $1,200.Figured I'd add this into the thread, I bought the 1990 Celebrity headlights and lauren engineering brackets for the Choo Choo Customs nose. So, bottom line is the immediate goal is to get this bad boy looking and running great now. I also want to eventually put in digital dakota gages. Then, I need to re-carpet the interior, replace the headunit and speakers, and fix the fuse that blew the power locks. That's probably going to run around $1,000 in itself. Rims and tires will be needed, but I don't want to go fancy, more original look. So after these two major jobs, I'm left with about $1,500 to put into everything else for the moment. If not, I'll just buy the add-on decals (which I've come to remember were silver on the maroon paint, not white). With the Choo Choo's, were the SS and CCC decals vinyl decals that were put on top of the paint, or were they painted on? I'm wondering because if they were painted on, I will have the body shop include the original decals in the paint job. I'm still wondering if it's worth painting the bed, or just getting a bed cover.Īlso, I did have a paint question. Right now it's looking like this will take about $3,500 to get done right (about $1,500 for the engine plus removal and install, $2,000 for the paint and body work). Then, as soon as its done, drop in the new engine and get it all done at once. My dad suggested doing both the paint and engine at the same time, this way we can take out the old engine, and paint the engine compartment at the same time as the rest of the car. Well, right now I have about $5,000 to put into it. The interior has minor things that need to be replaced, but not any huge concerns. The engine and paint seem to be the only major things that need to be taken care of. I was also wondering how much money I might be looking at putting into the car in this condition. The transmission is ok, and most other things are fine.Īny advice on what to do from here would be amazing. Now, it has the same 350 my dad put in it before it was stolen, but it once again needs to be switched out. Mechanically, it originally came with the usual 305-V8. The dash might need to be replaced, but I don't know if I want to do that considering it is the original dash with the Choo Choo symbol on the passenger side. The carpet needs to be replaced, but the bench is in surprisingly good condition. Now, the moonroof is cracked, the power locks are busted and it has no headunit. My father added aftermarket audio to it, with a dashcover. All power features, moon roof, bench seats, automatic transmission. Next, originally, the interior was virtually top of the line, and all-maroon to match the paint. I was wondering if I should re-paint it the original maroon with white or black decals to keep maximum value and originality, or go with black with white or silver decals. The body is still very straight, but the front nose may need to be replaced. Now, the car was repainted a dull maroon to disguise it, with no decals. It came in a sparkling Maroon with white SS decals on each door, the front nose, and tailgate. Originally, this car was top of the line. I don't have any pictures of the car right now (it is in South Florida, I'm in Tallahassee) but I will give a brief discription. I'm here to ask for as much advice on what I will need to do to bring this car back, spend as litle as possible, and make it as valuable as possible (with no intention of selling, just want to maximize the value of this rare find). This week, my dad is signing the title over to me as the first step toward restoring it. Since my brother purchased an '80 SS all-original and brought it to beauty about a year ago, I've been thinking about restoring my dads, and I've finally decided now is the time. Now, at 19, I'm ready to bring it back to its original glory. I had wanted this car since I was 7-years-old, but became discouraged when it was returned in '02 (then 11-years-old). Since we recovered the car, it's basically been a sitting duck in the driveway, rarely driven. Three years later, they found it in a chop shop in Miami, stripped down of all the chrome with 100K miles on it, totally beat. We had the car in showroom condition for years, up until the day it was stolen back in '99 (with 55K miles). My father bought an '87 El Camino SS Choo Choo Custom brand new off the showroom floor, and has owned it everyday since.
